Wellness

Infrared, explained honestly.

It is warm, it is quiet, and it is a very pleasant twenty minutes after a reformer class. Here is what it is, and what we are not going to tell you it does.

Reef Wellness Studio · Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury

Infrared has become a fixture in wellness clubs, and along the way it has picked up a great many claims. This page is the version without them.

What it is

A traditional sauna heats the air around you, and the hot air heats you. An infrared cabin uses infrared emitters that warm your body more directly, which means the air temperature can be considerably lower while you still feel very warm.

Practically, that makes it a gentler experience than a hot sauna. You can hold a conversation. You can stay in longer. It does not feel like being inside a kettle.

What a session is like

What we will not claim

Infrared is a pleasant, warm, quiet twenty minutes. That is what we are selling, and it is enough.

You will find infrared marketed with a long list of medical-sounding outcomes — detoxification, weight loss, immune effects, skin transformation. We are not going to repeat any of those, because we cannot substantiate them, and a business that will tell you an unsupported thing about a sauna will tell you an unsupported thing about anything else.

What we will say: it is a good reason to stay in the building after a class instead of rushing off, and being warm and quiet for twenty minutes is not a small thing in a busy week.

Who should be careful

Heat is not right for everybody. Speak to your GP first if you are pregnant, have a heart condition or circulatory problems, low or high blood pressure, take medication affected by heat, or have any condition affecting how you sense temperature. If you feel light-headed, come out. Do not use it after drinking alcohol.

Infrared at reef

Our infrared sits at the back of the building alongside the changing rooms and showers, so the natural shape of a visit is: class, infrared, shower, coffee, home — or class, infrared, and straight back to work.

It is £15 as an add-on to any session or on its own, and it is included with reef Unlimited membership. Prices here.

We open at 57 Wyle Cop in December 2026. More on the opening here.

Questions

While we are on the subject

What is infrared and how is it different from a sauna?
A traditional sauna heats the air, which then heats you. Infrared warms your body more directly, so the air temperature can be lower while you still feel warm. It is generally a gentler experience.
How long is an infrared session?
Usually twenty to thirty minutes. Take water in and shower afterwards.
Does infrared have health benefits?
We do not make health claims about infrared. What we will say is that it is warm, quiet and pleasant, and it is a good reason to stay in the building after a class.
Who should avoid infrared?
Speak to your GP first if you are pregnant, have a heart or circulatory condition, blood pressure issues, take medication affected by heat, or have any condition affecting how you sense temperature. Do not use it after drinking alcohol.
Will there be infrared at reef in Shrewsbury?
You will be able to add it to any session or book it on its own. Prices go to reef Club members before they are published. For the service itself, see infrared sauna in Shrewsbury.
Does reef have an infrared sauna?
Infrared has its own cabin at reef. A far infrared cabin runs at around 60°C where a traditional sauna needs about 85°C, so the air stays cooler while you still sweat. It comes after the Reformer, never instead of it, and we make no claim that it treats or prevents anything.
Is there a physiotherapist at reef?
There is a treatment room on site, down the hall from the studio, so hands-on support and the machine sit in the same building.
Where is reef in Shrewsbury?
reef is at 57 Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY1 1XJ, in the lower half of Wyle Cop in Shrewsbury town centre. There is a car park directly across the road, and St Julian's Friars car park behind the building holds 257 spaces.
What are the opening hours?
We plan to open 7am to 10pm, every day of the week. Those hours are confirmed when the building is finished.
When does reef open in Shrewsbury?
reef opens in December 2026. Pre-booking opens in November, and everyone on the free manual list is contacted first.
How much does Reformer Pilates cost in Shrewsbury?
reef publishes its prices and full timetable in November, and everyone on the free manual list sees them first. For orientation while you wait, the State of UK Pilates 2026 report puts a typical regional Reformer class at £15 to £26 a session. We will not invent a number and then change it.
How do I book?
Pre-booking opens in November, ahead of opening in December 2026. The fastest way to hear first is to download the free manual, which puts you on the founding list.
What is the Reformer Pilates Manual?
A free 42-page guide: the machine taken apart, the springs explained, your first 50 minutes minute by minute, every common worry answered, and every statistic sourced at the back. It arrives by email straight away and costs nothing.
