Red light therapy
in Shrewsbury.

Red light therapy is coming to reef at 57 Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury town centre, from December 2026. A session means sitting or standing close to panels that emit visible red and near-infrared light, usually for ten to twenty minutes. It is not hot, you keep your eyes shielded, and you can add it to a reformer session or book it on its own.

What red light therapy is

Panels that emit light in the visible red and near-infrared part of the spectrum, typically somewhere around 600–900 nanometres. You sit or stand close to them for a set period, with eye protection, on bare skin where you want the exposure.

It is sometimes called low-level light therapy or photobiomodulation. It is not a sunbed — there is no UV involved — and it is not the same thing as an infrared sauna, which uses heat. Infrared at reef is a separate thing.

What a session is like

What we will not tell you

We make no health, medical or cosmetic claims about red light therapy, and we are not going to.

You will find red light marketed with a long list of outcomes: skin, recovery, sleep, pain, hair, inflammation, ageing. We are not repeating any of them.

That is not us being coy. In the UK, the Advertising Standards Authority has repeatedly banned red light and LED advertising for making medical claims, and has ruled that even softer phrasing — “helps repair”, “fights the signs of ageing”, “accelerates healing” — counts as a medical claim unless the device is registered with the MHRA. A business that will tell you an unsupported thing about a light panel will tell you an unsupported thing about anything else.

What we will say: it is ten quiet minutes, it is pleasant, and it sits naturally at the end of a reformer session.

Who should check first

Speak to your GP before booking if you are pregnant, taking medication that increases light sensitivity (some antibiotics, acne treatments and St John's Wort do), have a history of skin cancer or any active skin condition in the area, or have an eye condition. If you are being treated for anything at all, ask your clinician rather than us.

Is there red light therapy in Shrewsbury?
Red light therapy is coming to reef at 57 Wyle Cop in Shrewsbury town centre from December 2026, alongside the reformer studio and infrared.
What is red light therapy?
Panels emitting visible red and near-infrared light, typically around 600–900 nanometres. You sit or stand close to them for ten to twenty minutes with your eyes shielded. There is no UV, so it is not a sunbed.
How long is a red light therapy session?
Usually ten to twenty minutes.
Is red light therapy the same as an infrared sauna?
No. An infrared sauna uses heat to warm your body. Red light therapy uses light and is only mildly warm.
Does red light therapy have health benefits?
We make no health, medical or cosmetic claims about red light therapy. UK advertising rules are strict on this, and we would rather say nothing than say something we cannot substantiate.
Who should avoid red light therapy?
Speak to your GP first if you are pregnant, take medication that increases light sensitivity, have a history of skin cancer or an active skin condition, or have an eye condition.
What should I wear for red light therapy?
As little as you are comfortable in over the areas you want exposed — light does not pass through clothing. Eye protection is provided.
Does reef offer red light therapy in Shrewsbury?
Red light therapy is under consideration and is not confirmed. If it is offered, it will be described factually and without health claims, because the ASA requires any medical benefit claim to be backed by a device registered with the MHRA.
Does reef have an infrared sauna?
Infrared has its own cabin at reef. A far infrared cabin runs at around 60°C where a traditional sauna needs about 85°C, so the air stays cooler while you still sweat. It comes after the Reformer, never instead of it, and we make no claim that it treats or prevents anything.
